The foot can be divided into the forefoot, the midfoot, and the hindfoot. The forefoot bears half your body’s weight and is composed of the phalanges – your 5 toes – and the metatarsals, which are the longer bones they attach to. The phalanges can be further grouped into three categories: the distal phalanges, which are the most distant from the center of your body, the middle phalanges, and the proximal phalanges. Note that your big toe does not have a middle phalanx bone. The big toe is also called the hallux. With only the distal and proximal phalanx bones, the big toe only has one joint, called the interphalangeal joint. Since the big toe attaches to the first metatarsal, the joint between the first metatarsal and the big toe is called the first metatarsophalangeal joint. Under the distal portion of the first metatarsal are the sesamoid bones – two small, round bones basically where the ball of the foot is. Onto the midfoot! The midfoot consists of 5 irregularly shaped tarsal bones. These include the three cuneiforms – the medial cuneiform bone, the intermediate cuneiform bone, the lateral cuneiform bone – as well as the cuboid bone and the navicular bone. The bones of the midfoot form the arch of the foot and act as shock absorbers. These bones connect to the bones of the forefoot and hindfoot via muscles and a ligament called the plantar fascia. The hindfoot includes the talus – or ankle – and the calcaneous. The calcaneous is the heel bone – the largest bone in your foot. The calcaneous has a cushy layer of fat underneath it to soften the impact of your footsteps. The calcaneous bone connects to the talus at the subtalar joint, also called the talocalcaneal joint. The top of the talus connects to the tibia and the fibula – the two long bones of the lower leg. Collectively, the bones of the mid and hindfoot – the talus, calcaneous, three cuneiforms, cuboid and navicular – are called the tarsals. Overall, the foot and ankle are composed of 26 bones – 14 phalanges, 5 metatarsals, and 7 tarsals. Between your two feet, that’s a quarter of the bones in your body! These bones are connected by 33 joints, and are moved by more than 100 muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Tendons connect muscles to bones and ligaments connect bones to other bones. We’ll cover more foot anatomy in another video!

Arthritis of the Big Toe: Diagnosis and Treatment at Holy Cross Orthopedic Institute

joints No Comments »

As we age, we develop wear and tear of all of our joints, including in our feet and toes. Also known as Hallux Rigidus, arthritis of the great toe joint can cause you pain. Over time the cartilage in your big toe joint can get worn down, which can cause narrowing of the joint and can also cause bone spurs to form.

Podiatrist (foot and ankle surgeon) Dr. Jennifer Boeri discusses how arthritis progresses, how it causes pain, how arthritis is diagnosed and what treatments are available at different stages.

Learn more about Dr. Boeri at https://orthopedics.holy-cross.com/jennifer-boeri-dpm.

Arthritis is the wear of the normal lining or cartilage of the joint and can occur in any or multiple joints around the foot and ankle.

In most people, there is no definitive cause and probably relates to the enormous stresses across the joint even when walking.

We’ve asked expert orthopaedic surgeon Mr Paul Hamilton to explain what arthritis of the foot feels like and how it can be treated.

How to do a toe touch. The toe touch is the well known jump in cheer leading. This jump is performed on the side lines, during performances and routines, and during cheers and sideline chants. Having flexibility through your hamstrings, lower back, and hips is helpful when trying to achieve the picture perfect toe touch. For the toe touch, we’re going to start in this position and we’re going to use counts to help us along the way. On one, we’re going to hit a high V, on two we’re going to hold, on three we’re going to swing our arms into this position with our legs bent. On four, we’re going to jump off the ground hitting a T motion bringing our legs up. On five, we’re in this position, we’re holding six. And on seven, we’re going to stand. Let’s do the toe touch to counts.

Ready? Five, six, seven, eight. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven. Great. When you’re performing your jump, when you hit your T motion, make sure that you chest is up and when your feet leave the ground that your legs are straight, you’re rolling your hips, and your toes are pointed. When you’re bringing your feet back together, make sure that your feet are all the way together and that there’s no space between your feet. And that’s how to do a toe touch.

Injini Toe Socks – My First Time Wearing (14 mile Test and Review)

joints No Comments »

This is my first time wearing INJINI TOE SOCKS which I took for a 14 mile test hike and then reviewed.

If you are interested in trying these yourself, you can find product links below!

After my video the other week in which I discussed my favourite hiking socks, (https://youtu.be/KvvLCyZXmu4) I had several comments and messages recommending that I try out the Injini Toe Sock – now this was something that I had seen but up until now, had never tried. They are supposed to be excellent for blister prevention, as well as comfortable and long lasting – but how did I get on with them? Are injini toe socks any good? Are injini toe socks better than standard hiking socks? Find out my personal verdict here!
